Hospice is comfort-focused care for a life-limiting illness, generally when a physician expects six months or less. It is delivered wherever the person lives — at home, in assisted living, in a nursing facility, or in a dedicated inpatient unit.

What to watch for with hospice care in Austin
- Medicare's hospice benefit covers the hospice team, medications related to the terminal diagnosis, and equipment. It does not cover room and board in a facility.
- Palliative care is not the same thing. It focuses on symptom relief and can run alongside treatment intended to cure, at any stage.
- You can change hospice providers, and you can revoke hospice and return to curative treatment. Families are rarely told either of those things clearly.

The Austin market specifically
Austin proper has the widest range of care levels in the metro and the widest range of prices with it. Central and west-side communities price toward the top of the market; north and northeast Austin is generally more moderate. Traffic is the practical constraint families underestimate — a community fifteen minutes away at 10 a.m. can be forty at six in the evening, and evening is when most visits actually happen.
Because Austin proper holds most of the metro's licensed capacity, it is also where you will find the widest spread in quality within a single price band. Two communities charging similar rates a few miles apart can differ sharply on staffing and turnover, so comparison matters more here than anywhere else in the metro.
Visit twice, at different hours
A scheduled mid-morning tour and an unannounced 7 p.m. drop-in can look like two different buildings. Evening and overnight are when staffing thins and when families are most often surprised, so ask the overnight ratio specifically rather than the daytime one.
Eat a meal there. Talk to a resident's family member in the parking lot rather than one the community introduces you to. Neither takes long and both tell you more than the brochure.
